Breaking News: Germany GK Robert Enke Commits Suicide

Sad reports are surfacing over the past hour that German national team goalkeeper Robert Enke has committed suicide. We have not yet seen official confirmation and will continue to look for it, but Enke reportedly had thrown himself under a train.

So, while we spend our days discussing David N'Gog's Tom Daley-esque diving skills and find humor from all corners of this beautiful game, we sometimes need to put it all in perspective.

Tragedies - like those in Colombia this year, as well as the Charlie Davies car accident - have certainly put a damper on a great 2009 in world football.

Enke was 32 years old and played for Hannover 96. He is survived by his wife Teresa.

This shocked me out of bed this morning. Can't believe it. I was born near Hannover, so they're one of my favourite teams. But more importantly, he just never was a guy you'd expect to hear this about. A fairly quiet, down-to-earth kinda guy who you never heard any negative headlines about.

But apparently he's suffered from depression since 2003 and received treatment. He and his wife also lost their 2 year old daughter in 2006. They adopted a baby this May. It's just sad.

RIP, Robert.
